How much will membership cost me?
There are no subscription fees and no costs to members other than your own travel expenses to and from each walk start point.
How long are the walks?
Walks are commonly circular and vary between 6 to 8 miles long and around 2½ to 3 hours duration as we do not tend to walk very fast.
Do you take rest breaks?
We usually have a 10 to 15 minute break around the halfway point so bring your own snacks and drink
When is the next walk?
Our programme of walks is available via the Walk List tab above, the Archive shows you our previous walks. The details for each walk are only sent to EWG members.
What time do the walks usually start?
The start time is traditionally based upon the time taken to drive to the start point if you leave Ely at 0930, so typically around 1000 - 1015. The actual start time of each walk is always stated in the detailed walk instructions and is set by that day's leader(s).
How do I get to the start of the walks and how far are they from Ely?
We usually go by our own cars, car sharing is sometimes available but only by private arrangement with other willing members.
The distance from Ely varies but is rarely more than 45 minutes drive from Ely.
How can I join the Ely Walking Group?
You will need an email address to join as all of the groups business is conducted only by email. Via the Contact or Join Us tab above, email your request to join to the walk coordinator. The text that you must use (for GDPR Compliance) in your email is shown in blue, just copy and paste it into your email, fill in your personal details and you will be notified by return email. It is deliberately very quick, easy and free to join.
What about insurance?
All members participate at their own risk and are entirely responsible for themselves and their equipment.
I have never led a walk. Is it necessary to be able to do so?
It is not necessary but it is always welcome and it is an enjoyable way to become more involved in the group. Helpful advice on planning a walk is always available.
Are there any age limitations or other restrictions/obligations that I should know about?
There are no age limits and no restrictions or obligations, not even to respond to emails or to walk each fortnight, you simply turn up at the specified place by the start time if you wish to walk with us that day.
Are dogs allowed?
Well behaved dogs and their owners are always welcome on the walks. Any dog is entirely the owners responsibility and should be kept on the lead when required. Please pick up as we go of course.
